Van der Pol, one of the Netherlands’ larger suppliers of butter and butter products is market leader in the packaging of fresh, top quality butter. This butter is delivered in virtually every shape, size and quantity imaginable, supplying traditional users, industrial customers, the hotel and catering industry, and consumer markets both at home and abroad.
Van der Pol’s products are universally recognized in the baking and confectionery sector, restaurant and catering businesses, and the supermarket segment. The most important characteristics of our products are their consistently high quality, excellent flavor and great ease of use. Van der Pol can boast of a more than 100-year tradition in the field of production and services, and we are proud to have been designated "Purveyor to Her Majesty the Queen".
In addition to butter, Van der Pol is a major producer of fresh and frozen basic dough’s such as puff pastry and croissant dough as well as bake-off products. Besides our standard range of products, we can also customize our products to suit a wide range of specific requirements. We can produce dough’s in accordance with customer-specific recipes, for example, or have our product development department devise new recipes. A brief history of D. van der Pol en Zonen
Joost van der Pol took the first steps toward the success of the Van der Pol en Zonen family-run business in 1885. Equipped with a yoke and two heavy baskets, he tramped his way to markets in cities and villages and sold butter door to door.
Joost’s enthusiasm and persistence paid off: by 1895, his trade had expanded to the point where he could exchange his yoke for a dogcart. Gradually, a small business developed that was serving more customers and requiring him to cover longer distances.
It wasn’t long thereafter that Van der Pol needed a horse-drawn delivery cart. In those days, butter was transported in wooden crates. A crate lined with linen would hold 50 rolls of butter, and chunks of ice were used in the summer to keep the butter from melting.
In 1926, Joost van der Pol amazed the village of Wijk en Aalburg with his purchase of a model T Ford pickup truck. His son Dirk, then 38 and thoroughly initiated into the secrets of the butter trade, became its first driver.
The Great Depression and World War II were difficult years for Van der Pol and Co. Dirk van der Pol witnessed a sharp decline in his company’s turnover and in 1939, his son Joost was mobilized into the Nation’s Military Service. The company could not afford to replace him. When the German army commandeered the company truck, business came to a halt.
After the liberation, Dirk and Joost set their shoulders to the wheel and solved their transport problem by using a genuine London fire engine truck. The company profited from the increasing prosperity and became one of the most prominent enterprises in its field.
In 1987, Queen Beatrix presented Van der Pol en Zonen with the designation "Purveyor to Her Majesty the Queen".
Since its founding in 1885, Van der Pol has been passed on from father "Dirk" to son "Joost" four times. Dairy Trading International B.V. acquired a majority interest in D. van der Pol en Zonen B.V. in 1989 and then purchased the remaining shares in March of 2000. Since that time, Dairy Trading International B.V. has been the sole owner of D. van der Pol en Zonen B.V.

Part of the Royal Buisman Company is H.J. Wijsman & Sons. Wijsman specializes in canned butter with a tradition for more than one hundred and fifty years! The famous red, gold and green tins with the Wijsman brand butter are exported to many countries all over the world. Butter in tins is a specialty product and asks for careful treatment during all stages and onward transportation.
Quality
All of Van der Pol’s products are described in product specifications that establish the name of the product, its properties, and the requirements the product has to satisfy. Putting down specifications is an essential condition for arriving at an outstanding product with consistent quality that will satisfy all the requirements and wishes of our customers. To guarantee this, all the products supplied by Van der Pol are made, stored and transported according to a quality system established in manuals. Van der Pol has its own laboratory that uses chemical and microbiological analyses to monitor whether ingredients and final products meet all the stipulated requirements.
HACCP
Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points is a quality control system developed by NASA for food-producing companies that is required within the EC and thus applies to Van der Pol as well. To confirm the way its control methods are applied, Van der Pol has had its HACCP system certified. You are welcome to request a copy of this certificate from us.
BRC
The British Retail Consortium developed a standard for the consistent assessment of food companies. Van der Pol has already been inspected according to the strict BRC standard several times in recent years and has been approved at higher level.
Biological products/SKAL
Van der Pol carries a number of biological products that must satisfy all the legally stipulated requirements in every aspect. SKAL, the regulatory authority, visits our company on a regular basis and confirms every time with pleasure that we are taking our responsibility for these products very seriously.
